What's the equivalent to hard-storage that quantum computing would be to CPUs? -
title says - if quantum computing intel's futuristic cpu, sandisk's (or seagate's) futuristic ssds , such?
lot's of articles online talk how quantum computers might process information/the strangeness of superposition not whether same tech or used long term storage.
these nicely introduce idea of quantum processing/try manage hype:
- does know “quantum computing” is? - stackoverflow
- quantum computing - explainthatstuff
in principle think long-term storage of qubits (which storage units in quantum computer instead of bits). however, it's fanciful thought several reasons. first, state of art figure out how make useful qubits last more few milliseconds. getting them last seconds huge advance; getting them last years require layers of sophisticated quantum error correction. it's hard imagine there ever entirely passive technology store qubits similar flash memory or that. second, , related point, mathematically impossible both preserve qubit , read value. is, can physically preserve qubit after reading it, act of reading changes state. if did have long-term qubits, storage time capsule. wouldn't able read them without using them up! useful somehow, i'm not sure how. don't know working on this, hypothetically.
the closest can think of light travelling through universe carries quantum states call "qubits". these qubits can last millions or billions of years. can't used in quantum computer, have heard very-long-distance quantum entanglement has been detected in physical measurements. i.e., it's interesting astronomy rather computer science.
